Illinoize

This is no doubt yesterdays news but it’s new to me, plus it’s free to download.

Dr Martina Cooper

martinacooper

I’ve been doing some bits around Dr Martin Cooper and Alexander Graham Bell, click here to see some more (if you’re into that kind of thing).

I’ve also been listening (repeatedly) to Aidan Moffat’s cover of Nine Million Bicycles by the fantastically irritating Katie Melua, click here to see her being dragged around by her feet like some kind of medieval torture.

She & Him

shehim

We went to see (500) Days of Summer earlier in the year (I suppose it was during the summer) and despite the many reasons there are to dislike it…i liked it. I also like She & Him so this video is a nice mix of the two.

Pastels & Tenniscoats - Two Sunsets

pasteltenniscoat

When I was a student I went to see The Pastels at The Venue in Edinburgh with some friends. They were the support for Luna but ended up playing after them to a disinterested crowd some of whom had their backs to the stage. Things were pretty ramshackle (even by their standards) and in an almost silent gap between songs someone turned round and said “Please stop”. It was quite uncomfortable.

Anyway, they recently released an album with the Tenniscoats which I like. The single is here and there’s a review from Anthony Fantano that’s worth visiting just to hear him say Glasgow (be warned though, he is incredibly irritating).

Ian Brown - My Way

monkeyman

So many great photos of the Monkey Man looking like a tool but I think the one above does the job. The question of how he’s still got a job, together with a brilliant review of the new album are here. Plus a nice little video of The Stone Roses around the time of the recording of Fools Gold is here and is kind of what you’d imagine …kagools, terrible dancing and setting fire to stuff.

Indie Ghetto

indieghetto

So basically it’s Hip Hip Covers from indie artists, some are rough but some are just great. In fact a few are great or at least not like anything else I’ve seen before.

The XX

7" Sleeve copy As much as I thought I’d hate this I don’t. Sounds to me like the cure when they were good. More from The XX here and the obligatory left field cover here.

The Top 500 Tracks of the 2000s

pitchfork

Hate them or really hate them, pitchfork is always good for a laugh and once in a while they make a big list and it’s fun to see what you agree with plus all the stuff you know for a fact is just shit plus the stuff you’ve never hear of.

dj rupture

uproot

So ‘last week’ but I’ve been getting right into Uproot recently. It’s great for getting stuff done to even if it does go a bit world music for my liking from time to time. Does this make me a hipster? Here’s a nice video in case you’re wondering if it’s your bag.

Aidan Moffat

aidanmoffat

Been busy doing something like real work so I’ve been a bit absent lately…not that anyone will have noticed. To make up for it here’s some actual genius from Mr Moffat. Then there’s a short story over at vice and his always entertaining I’m No Expert… agony uncle column.
