“Scottie Wilson (1891-1972), born Louis Freeman, was a Scottish outsider artist known particularly for his highly detailed style. It was a double bill round at my bit last night of Rushmore and The Squid Versus the Whale…I think Rushmore edged it.

The Beggar’s Benison “was a Scottish gentlemen’s club devoted to “the convivial celebration of male sexuality”. It was founded in 1732 in the town of Anstruther on the Firth of Forth”". It’s full title being “The Most Ancient and Most Puissant Order of the Beggar’s Benison and Merryland, Anstruther”.
There’s even a book on amazon. More general info here, a review of the book here and here’s the Club Notes from 1892. Who would have thought?

Again with Scottish cinema (or at least Scottish locations) in mind, I’ve been digging through scotlandthemovie.com and there’s some great info if you’re looking to find the filming locations of Highlander, Young Adam, The Wicker Man or even that creepy house from The Last Great Wilderness which as it turns out I’ve cycled past without even knowing…

It’s funny the things that stay with you and with the Scottish tour coming up it’s easy to find yourself thinking about Highlander again. Then you find the video for Princes Of The Universe by Queen and you wonder what the hell Freddie was thinking and how terrible the special effects now look. There’s a great review over at Not coming to a theater near you that sums it all up far better than i ever could.

Tonight Charlie Brooker is back on telly at 10pm on Channel 4. Strangely it’s a quiz show, which doesn’t seem like a good fit but apparently it’s all going to be okay.

I saw this years ago, late at night on Channel 4 and was moved to write to the production company in the hope of getting a VHS copy…which wasn’t forthcoming although i did get a nice letter.

“Henry Darger (1892–1973) was a solitary man who was orphaned and institutionalised as a child. In the privacy of his Chicago apartment, he produced 15,000 pages of text and hundreds of large scale illustrations, including maps, collaged photos and watercolors that depict his child heroes “the Vivian Girls” in the midst of battle scenes that combine imagery of the US Civil War with fanciful monsters”…so says wikipedia. There was a talk about him when i was at art school but somehow I missed it (that was before the internet). There’s a film too.

This mask (and the one you can see if you click on the image above) arrived from Japan and are already involved in a project. You gotta have a plan.

Finally picked up Blue Harvest for cheap in the HMV sale and I did really enjoy it. Mrs Pac was less impressed but that makes sense as she’s less of a fanboy. Although the interview with Seth Macfarlane and George Lucas was pretty toe curling.
